Over 10,000 athletes competed in this premier international multi-sport event from August 13^th to August 29^th, 2004 where the motto was Welcome Home. It was the first time since 1896 that the Olympics were held in Greece. The lighting ceremony of the Olympic flame took place in ancient Olympia and for the first time ever, the flame travelled around the world in a relay to former Olympic cities before returning to Greece.
